Caught on film: what are the best movies featuring corruption?

As the recent thriller The Whistleblower (2011) proves, corruption means big hits and big money at the movies. Transparency International Slovenia has come up with a list of the all time top films featuring corruption, transparency or whistle-blowing. Here’s a selection of their favourites:

Frost/Nixon (2008)

Based on a play by writer Peter Morgan, this retelling of the explosive post-Watergate scandal interview between former US president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) and British talk-show host David Frost (Michael Sheen) crackles with tension.

The Godfather: Part II (1974)

An absolute classic, the second part of the Godfather trilogy portrays Vito Corleone’s youth in Sicily and New York, whilst his son, Michael, expands the family’s criminal empire to 50’s LA, Hollywood and Cuba.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

This epic traces the fortunes of a group of Jewish gangsters in New York, following them from childhood to mobsters at the height of their powers during the Prohibition era, and their reunion 35 years later. Stars Robert De Niro; Sergio Leone directs.

Scarface (1983)

Starring Al Pacino in one of his most memorable roles and set in Miami in the 80s, Scarface documents the rise and fall of a Cuban immigrant who takes over a drug cartel.

Sin City (2005)

A comic book adaptation with a difference. This stylish movie uses groundbreaking technology to portray four interwoven stories of life in Basin City, a grim place where corruption and violence abound. It features stunning visuals and a great film noir atmosphere.
